Two recs and a meta link today:

First rec is another offering from [insanejournal.com profile] lomonaaeren, who is climbing steadily higher on my all-time favourite authors list. Her latest tale, A Reckless Frame of Mind (IJ or here for LJ) is preslash, elegantly written and with great emotional intensity. I believe a sequel is planned and I'm already eagerly awaiting it.

Second up is crack!fic from the lovely [insanejournal.com profile] eeyore9990. I got to the last line of this and nearly died of the giggles. I prudently decided not to explain the hysterics to my long-suffering boyfriend who, I think, would not have appreciated the story the way I did. Ahem...

Finally, some discourse on the fragmentation of fandom caused by Boldthrough, and why it could actually be a good thing for fandom, from [insanejournal.com profile] femmequixotic. I have to agree with her; I've made so many more posts since I moved to IJ because I want to actively promote fandom on this site, and get things moving again. And that can only be a good thing, no?

Aha!

Spoilerific answer to a question raised by fandom: )

I am currently packing for a trip to Sheffield. I'll be gone a week, with no internets!!! So if anything interesting happens or if there's any fics you reeeeeally think I should know about, then drop me a comment and let me know :D Cos I expect I will be declaring flist bankruptcy like I did the last time I left my flist untouched for a week!

Also, I should really cut my nails. I keep hitting capslock at the same time as the shift key.

So, I have one week to read OotP before the film comes out, and another week to read HBP before book 7 comes out. Given that I read HBP in 6 hours the day it arrived, I can't see that being a problem.

I just thought I'd check in and say "Hi!" to people, especially folks who I've recently friended and are friending me back. I am reading fics at the mo, and I have this long list in my bookmarks of things I need to rec... but I never seem to find the time to comment or actually make the posts. I'm a bad person, I know. I keep waiting for that lottery ticket to come good so I can devote my life to fun things instead of boring work. *le sigh*

One thing I did want to post before we get to book 7 is Secrets by Vorabiza. This story is a whopping 62 chapters and nearly 42,000 words long, but it's worth the effort. I decided when I read it about a year ago (yes, I suck that much with my reccing) that, if I didn't like how JKR ended book 7, I'd choose this story as my alternative.

Also, I've been thinking about posting a song-fic challenge for a while, but I'm going to wait to see what comes out of book 7 first. Although if DH ends with Harry going off into the sunset with the Weaselette, I may have to execute a full denial "la-la-la I'm not listening" act and revert to believing in aforementioned fanfic...

I'm almost afraid to read DH now.

I'm visiting my mate Andy in London, and last night we got on to the topic of the Harry Potter books (he's known for ages about my slash obsession). Andy was telling me how much he loved OotP and how disappointed he was by HBP.

Fair enough, everyone is entitled to thier opinions. But we discussed futher and it turns out that Andy got his copy of HBP as a ebook pirated from god knows where. So he starts talking about some of the plot elements and how it reads like bad fanfiction. At this point I ask if I can take a look at the ebook.

Guess what?

It is bad fanfiction!! With original characters and everything!

I'm not really sure what it says for JKR that Andy couldn't distinguish between the two...

Some random meta musings:

  1. I know fanon!Dean is an artist. I've seen very few fics where he's anything but an artist. But is there any supporting canon for his vocation? Where did the concept originate from?

  2. I am a grammar and spelling Nazi. To the extent that I won't actually read a fic that has a typo or poor phraseology in the summary. Am I saving myself from grammatical torture or am I cheating myself out of some good fics?

  3. I really need to get on with reccing some stuff. I have a bookmarks list a mile long but I seem to spend all my time reading the fics and no time telling anyone about them. Yes, I know I'm rubbish! But I'm also reading a ton of WiPs right now, and I hate reccing WiPs, just in case they don't get finished or there's 6-month intervals between updates...

Meandering waffle on my RL - feel free to ignore )

Something that's bothered me since I started reading HP fanfic is House Point Inflation.

On House Points... )

Snakes on a train!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] smutella for telling the world (well, the small corner I know about) about this.
