Just to be contrary, I'm reccing a fic on LJ to everyone: Nineteen Years Later was [livejournal.com profile] softly_sweetly's first reaction to the Epilogue of Dhoom. She's not terribly happy with it, so get over there, read it and give her some love!

Two recs and a meta link today:

First rec is another offering from [insanejournal.com profile] lomonaaeren, who is climbing steadily higher on my all-time favourite authors list. Her latest tale, A Reckless Frame of Mind (IJ or here for LJ) is preslash, elegantly written and with great emotional intensity. I believe a sequel is planned and I'm already eagerly awaiting it.

Second up is crack!fic from the lovely [insanejournal.com profile] eeyore9990. I got to the last line of this and nearly died of the giggles. I prudently decided not to explain the hysterics to my long-suffering boyfriend who, I think, would not have appreciated the story the way I did. Ahem...

Finally, some discourse on the fragmentation of fandom caused by Boldthrough, and why it could actually be a good thing for fandom, from [insanejournal.com profile] femmequixotic. I have to agree with her; I've made so many more posts since I moved to IJ because I want to actively promote fandom on this site, and get things moving again. And that can only be a good thing, no?

Not checking two flists for three days seems to be a bad plan. I had intended to make my "Cross-posting for Dummies" post this evening, but I've caught up on about half the fics I want to read and it really is time for bed. I have an interview tomorrow that I totally wasn't expecting. Expect a big RL post in about a week, when I know wtf is going on.

Anyway, choice gem of the evening is Stung by pushdragon (on LJ). Having had about 30 tabs open at one point, I have no clue where I got this rec from, but I suspect it may have been [insanejournal.com profile] celandineb. Anyway, this fic is Taming of the Shrew, post-war style :D Highly amusing, and kind of sweet at the end.

Also, I've noticed that email notifications are now working, but they're all coming to the same thread in my gmail. Is anyone else finding this?

Something to keep it interesting by [livejournal.com profile] jamie2109. H/D obviously, NC-17 obviously and 8900 words. Contains witty repartee, UST and a big fight.

Must. Upload. More. Icons.....

Building With Worn-Out Tools by [livejournal.com profile] lomonaaeren

This is seriously one of the best fics I've read in a long time. The plot was clever and kept stringing me along, making it impossible for me to not log on to LJ for the next installment.

The characterisation was wonderful! I loved how Draco went from an abstract what if... to an all-out Slytherin scheme to keep Harry. I loved following Harry as he learned how to live life and find happiness. I loved how Ginny got everything she deserved in the end. And I really loved how intense the sex scenes are!

A Year's Temptation, also by [livejournal.com profile] lomonaaeren

This one is an novel approach to a Veela fic. It's very different in tone from the above fic, being angsty and quite painful to read in places. I don't want to say too much about this one, or I'll end up spoiling it, but it's definitely worth your time. Again, the characterisations and emotion are what make the fic so good.

Unfortunately, none of the chapters of either fic have a "Click here for next part" link, so you have to navigate through the tags. It's still worth the effort!

So, I have one week to read OotP before the film comes out, and another week to read HBP before book 7 comes out. Given that I read HBP in 6 hours the day it arrived, I can't see that being a problem.

I just thought I'd check in and say "Hi!" to people, especially folks who I've recently friended and are friending me back. I am reading fics at the mo, and I have this long list in my bookmarks of things I need to rec... but I never seem to find the time to comment or actually make the posts. I'm a bad person, I know. I keep waiting for that lottery ticket to come good so I can devote my life to fun things instead of boring work. *le sigh*

One thing I did want to post before we get to book 7 is Secrets by Vorabiza. This story is a whopping 62 chapters and nearly 42,000 words long, but it's worth the effort. I decided when I read it about a year ago (yes, I suck that much with my reccing) that, if I didn't like how JKR ended book 7, I'd choose this story as my alternative.

Also, I've been thinking about posting a song-fic challenge for a while, but I'm going to wait to see what comes out of book 7 first. Although if DH ends with Harry going off into the sunset with the Weaselette, I may have to execute a full denial "la-la-la I'm not listening" act and revert to believing in aforementioned fanfic...

I'm almost afraid to read DH now.

So I don't check LJ for a week and look what happens!! And just as I was planning to make some recs...

Ah well, in celebration of getting [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies back, here's a rec anyway:

The Burning Times by DracosDirtySecret. This is not a happy, shiny fic. You'll want to read the warnings. But if you get past those, it's well worth it.

Oh, and another one! House Booty is Bad Booty by oceaxe. Fantastic UST! Nuff said.

I've also opened a GreatestJournal account here, in case of emergency. I really hope SixApart get their act together soon. I like my cyberhome and I have no desire to move.
queenbarwench: (obsession)
So. Damn. Hot! Warning: read within grabbing distance of willing patner or battery-operated toy.

I need a hotness icon.

Yet another holiday rec!! This one's called Gone Down the Angel on a Lonely Night (H/D NC-17). Lots to say about this, but not right now. Gotta go to bed.

I'm going away this weekend to sheffield. No internet til monday! How the hell am I gonna catch up on my flist?
queenbarwench: (miracle)
There's just soooo many lovely fics floating around with all the Xmas fic fests going on. So here's a Seamus/Dean fic that is just stunningly beautiful and therefore had to be mentioned.

A Root so Deep - by Anon, nice and NC-17 :D
queenbarwench: (interest in pain)
Heh! Check this out: My Loveless Haze. It's Harry/Pansy, which I never thought I'd enjoy, but this works. No smut, just a story and some humour. Written from Pansy's PoV in an nice snarky voice. It made me giggle :)
queenbarwench: (parseltongue)
If you're a fan of parselsmut, read this now. But not if you're at work because, trust me, you won't be able to concentrate afterwards.

This fic currently has no author attached, being for the [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays comm. I can't wait to find out who wrote it!

a proper review (contains spoilers for the fic) )

I have so many stories that I've been meaning to rec, but RL has been winning the game recently, and I just haven't felt like posting. I think I must do better...
queenbarwench: (held)
Oh my oh my oh my...

I read all 20 chapters of Tempus by [livejournal.com profile] ravenna_c_tan in one sitting on friday night (how exciting is my life?).

Author's summary: Students at Hogwarts have always been warned about corridors that appear and disappear. Did you ever wonder where they go? Or when? Harry thinks he is late to his seventh year potions class, but he turns out to be more than seventy years early.

So. Um... Words to describe how wonderful this fic is... Simply put, it's stunning. A wholely unconventional approach to a subject that's been done (badly) a hundred times before. It's one of those stories that draws you in so you can't look away from the page, and you fall in love right along with the characters. The then-and-now contrasts are wonderfully done and leave lots of "what-might-have-been"s floating in your mind. I love fics that feed your imagination even after you reach the end.

But read the warnings for each chapter - there are some bad characters who do nasty things. IMO, this is part of what makes the story, but some may be squicked. Use your own discretion.
queenbarwench: (Weakest link)
Check out Virtual Romance by [livejournal.com profile] the_viper_room, a fic in 4 parts. The format is emails, texts and wizIM conversations. Fluff with a touch of angst and a good dash of UST. Well worth a read, especially as some of the lines are hilarious. The joke Draco forwards to Harry about the nun in the cab had me giggling for ages.
queenbarwench: (mine)
Not sure I can say much about this fic before you read it without giving away the twisty (and twisted) plot. Fic is called The Revenant but it's not a vampire fic, which was my first thought with that title. Author [livejournal.com profile] furiosity gives the summary, "There's no mystery to Anton Becket. He's come to England in search of a different life, and a life is what he finds, but is it his?" It's 14,000 words long.

Just trust me and read it.
queenbarwench: (held)
I've been catching up after two weeks away.

And most of what I'm reading are WiPs (which I prefer not to rec until they're complete) or little one-shots. Maybe I should do a one-shots post... if I can find them all again.

Anyway, the subject of today's post is [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier and two of her stories.

First is Lettered, closely followed by its sequel, Lush Life.

Both are Draco's PoV and, because the format is mostly letters, you only get Draco's half of the conversation. You have to infer the rest.

Warnings for tasteful smut and angst. And for time-wasting - Lettered is nearly 17,000 words and Lush Life is almost 20,000. Not for the 10 minute coffee break!

Read the rest of [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier's stuff here. She keeps all her stories on LJ too, but I've linked to Skyehawke because I like how that archive works.

Edit: There's also a story by another author for [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix (currently anon because of the rules of the challenge) that is "Lettered" retold from Harry's PoV. Check it out here.
queenbarwench: (held)
Ages ago, before AFF went on its little downtime holiday, I read this story. And then somehow forgot about it!

So, rediscovered, Cactus Angels by [livejournal.com profile] lucilla_darkate.
Doesn't list a summary, but does list warnings: The reaction I have gotten from this has always been pretty positive. There have been a few people who... freaked out. Not my problem. This story deals with S&M and it is highly erotic. Features sadist!Draco and masochist!Harry. If pain during sex features on your kink-list, you will love this fic; if it doesn't, best to give this one a miss.

22 chapters, so another one to save for the weekend. Happy reading :D

Ohhh, I really like this one. Draco is out-Slytherined by Blaise, with lovely, smut-rated consequenses that happen to involve Harry. Very sweet, hot ending.

Rather longer than I expected for a two-part stroy, so not one to start reading just before bedtime on a weeknight. Save this one for a weekend.

Du Bullio by The Ruby Moth.
Summary:Poor Draco. In the wake of Voldemort's defeat, Hogwarts is open for Draco's seventh year when he is given a second chance to take his N.E.W.T.s, but the Slytherins are desperate to regain their house pride. With the help of a forbidden spell, Draco shoulders the task of watching Harry Potter. Needless to say, things do not go as planned, and reality bubbles are popped.
