queenbarwench: (Coffee Now!)
I picked this up from [community profile] otw_news: Buffy vs. Edward - a Twilight remix. I'd forgotten how awesome Buffy is. As soon as I can unpack my dvds, I'll be starting a rewatch, I think.

I'm other news, the study and the living room will be decorated next weekend. I'd hoped to have a job by now so that I could splash out on some Billy shelves for the study. *sigh* Looking for a job is starting to feel a little like Catch the Pigeon. The Pigeon always wins.

Paz and I got back from Belfast on Monday night, and have been diligently making progress on the house since then. I'm very bored of cleaning. I also had my first driving lesson in 10 years yesterday, which was rather more fun.

Musings on my future )
queenbarwench: (rock is dead)
Today, Paz and I got up early, emptied our wardrobes and dismantled the bed. The carpet fitters arrived at 12:00 and were gone half an hour later. We has a bedroom carpet! And the most expensive underlay. These things lead to happy feets :D

We're not too sure how they actually got the carpet laid, as the door wouldn't move across it. We've taken the door off its hinges and borrowed a plane from my Dad to take a couple of millimetres off the bottom. We spent the rest of the day moving all the furniture back into the room, dusting each piece carefully to quarantine as much plaster dust as possible. We now have sufficient Tetris space in the spare room to start dealing with the rest of the house.

Of course, with Paz being home and us doing housey things, I totally forgot that it was monday. I should have been at the job centre this afternoon to sign on, but it was 6pm before I remembered what day it was. Doh! Does anyone have a creative lie I can use to explain my absence? Although I'm not sure it's worth a lie. It's not like they're actually giving me any money. Bastards. NI credits on their own aren't worth the hassle.

It's 11pm and the thermostat reads 24°C. I'm pretty sure today is the hottest it's been in Newcastle for about 2 years. Last year, summer didn't happen at all. It's been very hot all day and I've worked very hard in the house, so I took a nice cooling shower and haven't bothered with any nightclothes. Or a bathrobe. Hence, the naked posting.

Nighty night, all :D

PS: As advertised, lolcats made me lol. Without the cats. )

The truly awesome [insanejournal.com profile] lilithilien bought me paid time on Dreamwidth! *hugs her mightily* I now have to organise all my icons on IJ so that I can then port them to DW. And there will also be polls... But not today, I think.

Today, I am going to wear a sundress for the first time in two years (\o/ we actually have sunshine) and I'm going to make brownies. After lunch I shall go into town to meet Claire, who is up from London for a funeral :( but I'm still glad I get to see her. Then Paz and I have to empty our wardrobes onto plastic sheeting, dismantle the bed and set the mattress on another sheet. The new carpet is being fitted tomorrow! Am very excited *bounces* And tonight there will be Neverwinter Nights, and "Sneak Attack, bitch!" Or maybe some Smite Evil, depending on which server we play on.

I have 26 tabs open in my browser awaiting some action on my part. I need to clear the decks so I can run updates on my PC. In theory, I could use session-saver, but it will reopen my DW tabs without logging me in, and DW doesn't redirect when that happens. So, deck clearance. Please prepare for incoming spam (sorry).

It's half an hour into tomorrow and I've just finished doing my grocery shopping online. Isn't the internet wonderful?

I spent a nice day with my dad, who bought me lunch, and my cats, who were entertaining. Tomorrow (defined as the time after I have been in bed asleep; it's still today until then) I must get back to the painting. Therefore, tis time for bed.

Nighty night all, or enjoy the rest for your day, depending on your geography.

Last week I was rather scattered due to the lesser hell known as progesterone (srsly, it's evil! Why do we need it, again?) and I fell behind on lots of things. This weekend, I have been catching up (a tiny bit).

All the woodwork in the loo has been sanded, the first coat of white paint is on, holes have been filled and sanded and today there will be the second white coat. Paz and I are doing the utility room together and that has had two white coats and one 'spring daffodil' coat. It's not the colour I intended to buy: we had two yellow tester pots and I suspect the labels were switched. It still looks good; just a bit brighter than we had intended. One more coat to do, and the woodwork, then we can move the tumble dryer in and declare it (mostly) done. We still need to put a work surface in at some point, but that can come later.

We've also been spending quite a bit of time gaming recently. We have a regular group going on EQ2 with a few members of our raid guild and the group set-up is perfect. We are cheesing some of the hardest zones in the game. Mobs-in-a-blender, srsly! And Sunday nights have stopped being traditional tabletop D&D and become virtual D&D with Neverwinter Nights. I has a rogue, and there is much Sneak Attack!

And I have fic to read, and fic to rec, and fic to beta.

There's all this gorgeous sunshine outside and I'm inside, either painting walls or at the computer. What am I doing???

I love buying things with gift vouchers - I feel like they're free, even though it's actually a belated claiming of a christmas gift. Anyway, I have a new teapot for loose-leaf tea, and a large packet of jasmine tea from Tsang Foods on Haymarket. They also have 10kg bags of jasmine rice for about £12, which is stupidly cheap. As soon as I have my pantry ready, I'll be bulk-buying.

The builders are nearly finished on the house. They have a day of painting in the bedroom, and they have to take away all of the rubbish, but they're nearly done. That's not to say the house is nearly done, oh no! Now we have to redecorate every other room in the house. And clean about 15 times. There is so much dust, and Paz and I are adding to it each time we start sanding down the woodwork. Too much to do!

I should also be working harder at looking for a new job, although the redecoration work kinda qualifies as full time. Only without the salary :(

I've been reading some pretty great fics lately, but I've had no time to make a recs post. Note to self: must do that tomorrow.
queenbarwench: (rock is dead)
It's been quite a manic few days. Builders were supposed to be finished on Friday; they weren't. They were back today, despite the bank holiday, but are still not done. I'm also not 100% happy about the things that they have done today. Paz and I have also spent quite a lot of time looking at carpets, buying paint samples, sanding walls and cleaning up after builders. I think tomorrow will be more of the same.

I have recs to post, and no time, damnit!

Also, tag autocomplete! Loving DW more and more.

Fail

queenbarwench: (Windmills)
Torrent!Fail: Paz is downloading something on a torrent. It appears to have eaten all of our 20 meg bandwidth. The stupid thing is that I think it's finished downloading, but it's eating more resources while it "idles". I don't have Paz's password to check and kill the process, so I am back to dial-up levels of slowness. How did I ever live without broadband????

Weather!Fail: What happened to Spring? I'm freezing to death here! And my boiler is currently 'outside' (although it will be 'inside' by the weekend) so I can't go and turn the heating on early, as I can't go out in the middle of the night if I forget to turn it back to automatic.

House!Fail: The outhouses that are about to become the utility room and pantry have structural door frames. Why would you put an exposed wooden frame in and then build on top of it? We need to have steel bars put in so they can take the frames away. Stupid 1950's crazy building ideas *grr arg*.

Builder!Fail: Why can't they take their mugs back to the kitchen at the end of the day? I'm not their mother!

Fridge!Fail: The seals are going on the fridge-freezer, so if the freezer door isn't extra-push shut, everything ices up. I have frozen carrots and limes in my veg drawer. Limes should not go 'clonk' when you move them.

Dinner!Fail: Nachos for tea, because I'm lazy.

In non-fail news, the tiler starts tomorrow morning in the bathroom, and the joiner will be here on Friday to fit the new back door. I can sort of see the end to all the building work now, although the house is a horrible mess and we'll still have to repaint every room. Does anyone know whether 2mm or 3mm grouting will look better with plain white tiles? I haven't a clue.

Also, Dreamwidth. I've noticed several people mentioning it recently, but I don't know that much about it. Should I be paying more attention?
queenbarwench: (emote: facepalm)
I didn't get the job I wanted, despite the interview going very well and being invited back to meet the team. Which sucks, because I would really have liked the job and the company. No gratuitous purchases for me while I'm in London, then. I made chocolate brownies to cheer myself up.

On the plus side, I can monitor the builders until they've finished work on the house; I can actually book some driving lessons; I can use the gym membership I'm about to sign up to (I don't have a bathroom right now and I want a shower, and I could also use the exercise); I can draw up a plan for the garden and I can do some studying.

This time tomorrow I shall be on a train to London, where I will see all my mates and have a damn good time.
queenbarwench: (Busy!)
It appears that it's been some time since I made a meaningful post of any sort (or even a meaningless one, at that). So, here be list:

  • Got made redundant at the beginning of the month. They paid me quite well to go away, and it turned out to be convenient because...
  • I have a house full of builders for the next month and have spent the last 2 weeks packing up and shrink-wrapping my life to protect it from dust.
  • I have a big hole where the partition between the kitchen and the dining room used to be.
  • I also have a small hole in the brickwork leading to the attached outhouse. While this will become our new utility room and part of the indoors, it is currently still part of the outdoors and is letting in the equinox winds. Brrrrrr!
  • I signed on for the first time this afternoon. I'm finding the whole job centre experience a little bewildering - it's not really designed for people like me.
  • I have a job interview on the 3rd, for which I will have to do quite a bit of research first.
  • I will be going to London at Easter, where I will meet up with [personal profile] lilithilien, which will be way cool :D
  • If I get the job (and find out before going to London) I'm going to spend a lot of my redundancy money in Long Tall Sally. There may also be a new ipod. If I get the job.
In fandom, I am being slowly sucked into Merlin/Arther fics (and I need a few icons) but I am still totally hooked on the McShep. Speaking of which, you should read Cycle by Lavvyan. And then go here. It is truly awesome that a little AU fanfic can spawn its own sub-fandom *hugs fandom*.

I shall make an attempt to post in a more regular fashion. But I promise nothing :D

Many thanks to folks for birthday wishes. I've had a good day :D

BF brought me breakfast in bed, I potted a little Japanese Maple, I collected £100 in John Lewis vouchers (red dress or new saucepans?) and I went on my first EQ2 raid with my lvl 80 Fury.

My, don't I have eclectic interests...?

Anyway, bed now, as sadly, I have work tomorrow. The weekends should be longer; it is my birthday wish.
queenbarwench: (hiding kitty)
I had hoped for internet access while I was visiting friends for a week, but alas, it was not to be :( So, I've just got home, checked my email (not too bad), ignored a heap of Facebook requests (also not too bad) and been through my flist. I reached skip=120 before getting back to the last post I recognised and I have 31 tabs open to read and/ or comment on.

But first, I have to sort out my washing, rediscover my bedroom floor, open and file my post, write a couple of overdue emails and start sorting out my old PC to give to mother. Then maybe I can read some fic.

Are holidays supposed to be this much faff?
queenbarwench: (emote: rodney bitch)
Some random meta musings:

  1. I know fanon!Dean is an artist. I've seen very few fics where he's anything but an artist. But is there any supporting canon for his vocation? Where did the concept originate from?

  2. I am a grammar and spelling Nazi. To the extent that I won't actually read a fic that has a typo or poor phraseology in the summary. Am I saving myself from grammatical torture or am I cheating myself out of some good fics?

  3. I really need to get on with reccing some stuff. I have a bookmarks list a mile long but I seem to spend all my time reading the fics and no time telling anyone about them. Yes, I know I'm rubbish! But I'm also reading a ton of WiPs right now, and I hate reccing WiPs, just in case they don't get finished or there's 6-month intervals between updates...

Meandering waffle on my RL - feel free to ignore )

Having had so little time over Xmas and New Year to actually get online and read my flist, it has got to the point where I cannot possibly catch up. So I'm declaring Flist Bankruptcy and not even attempting it.

If there's anything exciting been happening or a story you think I should really know about, comment here.

I have quite a few fics from the Fests that I need to rec, but I need to find the time to go back and a) remind myself of the story so that I have something to say and b) find out who actually wrote the stories!

You know, the original purpose of this LJ was to cut the length of my Fics Bookmarks list... it really hasn't worked!

We went out for Halloween, as we have done the last two years, but this time we went in fancy dress! Our theme was Badger Badger Badger and no less than twelve different people came up to us to comment on our costumes. Yay us!!

Anyway, Legends has firedancers for special events, and the bloke is particularly tasty to look at. The lighting in the club makes it impossible to get a good pic, so what you can see is mostly sparks from the angle grinder grinding against the metal plate on the front of his trousers. I'd say 'on his belt' but it was riding lower than that...

Firedancer is tall, blond, slender and impressively flexible. And a plot bunny spiked my drink. There's various fics about Harry or Draco working as strippers in Muggle clubs. I want Draco as the Firedancer. Harry can be in the audience or part of the show, as you please.
